The word, mania, according to Merriam-Webster online Dictionary is derived from an old Greek word, which means to be mad. The dictionary lists the following two definitions for the word –
a. excitement manifested by mental and physical hyperactivity, disorganization of behavior, and elevation of mood
b. excessive or unreasonable enthusiasm
The term “Obamamania” was coined in 2007 and was developed from the 1960’s term, Beatlemania, which originated to describe the frenzied behavior exhbited by their fans,(yours truly being one) at concerts and wherever they appeared.
Barack Obama supporters seem to exhibit a similar frenzied level of devotion for their candidate.
His European tour was given much press and he was welcomed abroad with much enthusiasm.
Below is a tongue in cheek reporting of Obama’s overseas tour by Gerard Baker, US Editor and Assistant Editor of The Times of London.
