Let’s hear it for the 111th… Congress that is

The 111th session of the United States Congress will begin this Saturday, January 3rd, 2009. The senators and representatives will convene for the first time on Tuesday, January 6th.

Congresses run in two year sessions. We just finished the 110th Congress last month, which began in January, 2007. Since bills do not carry over from one session of Congress to the next, any bills that were not enacted in the last Congress(110th) will have to be reintroduced in the new Congress(111th).

This new Congress has their work cut out for them. Lawmakers are reconvening amid the worst economy since the Great Depression.
In addition to the economy, this Democratically controlled Congress plans to press for early congressional action on other longstanding Democratic priorities, such as an expansion of children’s health insurance (that President George W. Bush vetoed) and legislation making it easier for workers to prevail in pay- discrimination lawsuits.
