The final version of the House Judiciary Committe staff report to John Conyors Jr., examining the systematic abuses of presidential power during the Bush presidency, was released today.
This document, aptly called “Reining in the Imperial Presidency: Lessons and Recommendations Relating to the Presidency of George W. Bush.”, contains 47 separate recommendations “designed to restore the traditional checks and balances of our constitutional system. Recommendations include calls for continued committee investigation, a blue ribbon commission to fully investigate administration activities, and independent criminal probes.
This is the second report by Representative Conyors outlining constitutional transgressions by George W. Bush’s administration. In the summer of 2006 he authorized an investigation and released the report, The Constitution in Crisis:The Downing Street Minutes and Deception, Manipulation, Torture, Retribution, and Coverups in the Iraq War, and Illegal Domestic Surveillance.
